The lack of Black-owned brands sold at major retailers has become even more apparent in the past month. As Black Lives Matter protests surge around the quality wigs country, activists are calling for support of Black lives—and that includes support for Black-owned businesses. Aurora James, the designer behind Brother Vellies, started the 15 Percent Pledge this past June, which calls upon to retailers to commit 15 percent of their buying to Black-owned businesses. So far, retailers like Sephora and Rent The Runway have signed the pledge, while others have fallen short.
According to the 15 Percent Pledge, only 21 out of the 2,365 brands that Nordstrom carries are Black-owned, making it less that 1 percent of their shelf-space. And they aren’t alone. These staggering numbers have become the norm throughout major corporations.
July 7 is Blackout Day 2020, which is a “day of solidarity in America where not one Black person in America spends a dollar outside of businesses owned by Black people,” according to the movement’s official website. It’s a great chance to reevaluate your own spending, and direct some of your shopping toward Black-owned brands.
To keep the momentum going on Blackout Day and beyond, here are over 11 Black-owned fashion brands you can shop at some of the most popular retailers such as Nordstrom, Shopbop and Net-A-Porter.
